The relationship between music and poetic language is that the language of the music evoked by the lovers created the music that transformed the genius into the “angel.” Because of this phenomenon, the power evoked by the music is also accessible to the written language. These two are forms are intertwined. Elements of the story that are fairy tale like is the genius under the spell, the transformation of him into the “angel” character, and the fact that although the story took place in the Orient, the readers do not know where or when. The elements that make it more specifically a Kunstmärchen is transformation of the genius into a “higher plane,” as well as the longing of the lovers, which leads to the transformation.

I follow you on your point that the language of the music evoked by the lovers creates the music that transforms the genius into the angel. However, I think the relationship between language and music in the lovers' song is probably the most important part of this idea. Do you think that the music forms the words, or the words form the music? How does the order in which they are created make a difference?
ReplyDeleteI also agree that the relationship between the language and music is the most important thing here. I would say that perhaps the music forms the words because this story seems to be getting at the great function music has in man's life. By hearing certain music we are inspired and create language to go along with it. But then again it could be the other way around, I'm not really decided I guess, I think sometimes it depends on the situation.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Chester -- although most people would agree that the words form the music, I feel that in this situation it is not necessarily a cause and effect. I think that it is the conversion, or the forming of both art styles that have an affect on one another.
